Habitat: native to southern India and Sri Lanka.  It is grown in Guatemala, Nepal, Thailand and Central America.

Culinary use: you can use the whole pods or open them and use only the seeds. The whole pods are widely used in Indian and Asian cuisine, and for flavouring oils, vinegars, drinks, pickles, rice dishes or meat stews. The ground form is used to make bread, biscuits and cakes.
