Habitat: spontaneous, and in fields in Southwest Asia, India, Madagascar and in tropical regions of South America.

Culinary use: in stick form, to flavour infusions, pacharán (flavoured liqueur), cider and tea. In ground form it is used for confectionery, baking, rice and flour.
